Hannibal Bank, located off the coast of Panama, is a UNESCO world heritage site known for its high levels of biodiversity. The biodiversity and distribution of arthropods were analyzed using genetic and image data collected from a research cruise in 2015. Genetic data was used to determine the number of species collected at Hannibal Bank based on DNA barcodes, and image data was used to study the distribution of arthropods and discern patterns throughout the bank. The genetic data identified that among the 99 samples collected, 39 different species and 10 families are represented. The image data identified a pattern between the depth of the seamount and the species found at that depth. There were high density peaks of brachyuran crabs are found at depths of 300-400 m while high density peaks of anomuran galatheids are found in shallower waters at 100-200 m. However, all these groups were found throughout the bank. Determining the biodiversity of the arthropods in Hannibal Bank may provide a baseline for further studies.118 Resources
