Patellar instability (PI) is a pathology of the patellofemoral joint(PFJ), which consists of the articulation between the patella and the distal femur. It commonly results in recurrent subluxations and dislocations throughout the patient’s lifetime. Study of predisposing factors reveals extreme anatomies effecting ligamentous, osseous, and muscular stability, which make a patella more susceptible to instability. In this literature review, the following were studied: history, epidemiology, morphology, etiology/pathogenesis, treatment, and contraindications. Cadaveric dissection was used to understand joint function, congruence and typical anatomy of the PFJ.
